A Delightful Show
I have seen this stage production three times, one was on Broadway. This latest production did not meet what I saw on Broadway, nevertheless it was truly enjoyable. A.L.Webber's music can carry even a mediocre cast.
The production I attended featured one of the understudies, Kaitlyn Davis, as Christine. She was wonderful, and I can't imagine that the headliner actress could have done a better job. Quentin Oliver Lee as the Phantom was terrific and his voice carried well in the theater. Jordan Craig's voice was less powerful, this being noticeable when he and the Phantom were pitted against one another, as in the cemetery scene. It was difficult to pull out the character Raoul's words when being layered with the voice of the Phantom.
The opening scenes were dark and dialogue was barely distinguishable. It is understandable to keep those scenes so, but perhaps a bit more light and more volume?
Overall, a most enjoyable performance.
